How to Cast Your Own Love Spell: Herbs, Sigils, Crystals and Oils

If you are thinking about casting your own love spell, it helps to know which tools to use and how to protect yourself first. We cover the herbs, crystals, oils, sigils and taglocks used in love spells, plus a simple candle spell you can do at home.

Why should you protect yourself before spell work?

Many witches believe spell work stirs up energy that can attract bad energy and meddling spirits. Protecting yourself first helps keep them away from you and your spell.

A love spell is also aimed at another person, who may have their own spirit team, such as spirit guides or ancestors. If their spirit team pushes back, you could face backlash without protection.

How do you protect yourself?

Here are three simple ways to protect yourself before you start.

• Wear a protective amulet or charm. Choose one that feels right for you. Personally, I wear a Thai amulet before starting any spell work.
• Cleanse your space. Clear the energy around you before any spell work, for example with incense or a cleansing candle.
• Light a protection candle. No amulet or charm? Light a simple protection candle before you begin.

Which herbs are linked with love?

These herbs are commonly used in love spells.

• Rose. Romance and loyalty.
• Apple. Love and beauty.
• Basil. Fidelity and harmony.
• Jasmine. Spiritual love and intuition.
• Cinnamon. Attraction and affection.

Choose the herbs whose properties match what you want. Cleanse them, then enchant them by speaking your intention into them.

Grind them if you like, then lightly roll your candle in them or scatter them around it.

Which crystals are used for love?

These crystals are commonly associated with love.

• Rose quartz. Self-love and compassion.
• Garnet. Passion, devotion and commitment.
• Moonstone. Love and new beginnings.

Hold your crystal while you set your intention, then place it beside your candle.

Which oils are used in love spells?

Oils are often used to dress, or anoint, a candle before a spell. Rose and jasmine oils carry the same love associations as the flowers.

You can also make your own spell oils, such as love oil, obsession oil or domination oil. Blend ingredients with matching properties, then charge the oil under moonlight for a set number of days.

What is a sigil and how do you make one?

A sigil is a symbol that holds your intention.

A simple way to draw one by hand uses an alphabet wheel.

• Write your intention. Keep it to one short sentence, such as "I am loved and adored".
• Cross out the vowels. For our example, that leaves M, L, V, D, N, D, D, R and D.
• Write the alphabet on a wheel. Write the letters A to Z evenly around a circle.
• Trace your sigil. Join the remaining letters on the wheel with one continuous line, in the order they appear. The shape it makes is your sigil.

What is a taglock?

A taglock links your spell to your target, the person the spell is for. It draws on sympathetic magic, where things once in contact with someone are believed to stay connected to them.

Your spell needs one so it reaches the right person. Common taglocks include their belongings, bodily fluids, photo, full name and date of birth.

Which candle should you use?

Many witches use a plain pink or red candle for love spells. For a candle made for love, try one of these from our blessed spell candles range.

How do you cast a simple love spell?

Love spells are often cast on a Friday, which in Latin was called the day of Venus, or while the moon is waxing. Our guide to how witchcraft works explains how timing is used.

• 1. Protect yourself. Wear your amulet or charm, or light a protection candle, then cleanse your space.
• 2. Cleanse and enchant your tools. Cleanse your candle, herbs and crystal, then speak your intention into them.
• 3. Carve your candle. Carve your intention, your sigil and your taglock, such as their full name and date of birth, into the wax. On a glass jar candle, write them on the glass instead.
• 4. Dress your candle. Dress it with a little of your own love oil, domination oil or other spell oil, keeping it away from the wick. Then lightly roll it in your herbs, or keep them to scatter around it.
• 5. Write your petition. Write your intention on a small piece of paper, for example "John Doe (01 January 1993) is wholeheartedly in love with Jane Doe (12 March 1995)". Draw your sigil underneath.
• 6. Set up your altar. Place your petition and any physical taglock, like their photo, under a fireproof tray, or keep the petition aside to burn. Set the candle securely on the tray, with your crystal and herbs around its base.
• 7. Light and visualise. Light the candle, and burn your petition safely in the flame if you kept it aside. Visualise your outcome while the candle burns.
• 8. Finish the spell. Once the candle has burned down, discard the remains or bury them near where you live.

Keep your candle safe while it burns.

• Stay with it. Never leave a burning candle unattended or burning overnight.
• Keep it steady. Keep it upright on a stable, heatproof surface.
• Keep it clear. Keep it away from children, pets, draughts and anything flammable.
• Mind your additions. Keep crystals, paper and loose herbs away from the wick and flame, and use only a light coating of herbs on the candle.
• Put it out. Extinguish it before you leave the room or go to sleep.
